WHO: David Bossie and Cloud
WHERE: The chocobo farm and later the subway tunnels
WARNINGS: Violence, death

Bossie hasn't slept in two days. He's tried, but not very hard. Closed eyes here, startling awake a few minutes later. Has he taken his meds? He can't remember. Can't find them, in any case, too distracted when he looks for them to really track them down.

He thinks about going to find Harold, asking him for that potion or tonic or whatever you want to call it, the miracle that gives him dreamless sleep. But it's well past midnight by the time that thought occurs to him.

By that time he's already out walking, breathing soft behind his mask, weapons strapped to his back and waist.

He goes to the chocobo farm, a half formed idea in his head. Birds calm him. They always have. Even these weird, big, dumb chicken looking alien birds. He'll just watch them a while, and then he'll find someone.

Slit their throat. Knife to the brainstem. Easy as hell. He'll hear God then.

He creeps in slow, sticking to the darkest shadows he can find.

What's a good intro? Welcome to Etraya? Has the despair set in yet? Anyway. For those who haven't met me, my name is Dr. Robert Romano, I'm the de facto Hospital Director here.

De facto means no one's told me I'm not.

Every so often I post to ask the network if there are any other medical professionals around because I'm one surgeon from a non-magical world, and you people drop in with fairy flus and growing tentacles diseases I can't damn well fix.

So, if you're a doctor or a healer, drop in. We'll have an interview, if you're not an obvious psychopath and get a pass on ethics I'll give you an office, we got 21st century Earth medical tech and a wing to treat magical maladies.

If you're in need of a doctor, also drop in, I'll be nicer to you than to the first group.

If you're neither, what are you even doing here? Get a job. Go bag some groceries, the bots keep squishing my bread :(

Mission 13 Wrap-Up

We're trying something new with this post as a result of a few pieces of feedback we've gotten. Let us know what you think and if this is helpful! In the future, this would go up at the conclusion of missions in a more timely fashion.

Major Events on Mission 13
  • Characters were generally successful in documenting Mesa, and some brought back seeds and biological samples
  • Anyone who explored a research or terraforming plant could have discovered some substantiating information about the decline of the universe
  • No one pursued finding a way to save the residents of Mesa, so they are doomed along with the world itself
  • Dante and Vergil sparred and wrecked some grasslands, leaving a small canyon behind
Mission Forecast
Handy link to the calendar. Note that plans are always subject to change based on player interest and mod availability!

  • March - lighter tone, taking place in Etraya on-planet, a few darker options
  • May - heavy, serious, meta-plot related; off-world; characters can limit exposure to intense themes but can't avoid entirely without a mission pass (AC reward)
Until Next Time
Players are always welcome (and strongly encouraged!) to develop Etraya in between missions. Want more societal structure? Think your character needs a job? Go for it! Use this post to comment below with what your plans are for the time between missions, and see if others are interested.

We'd like to highlight that there's been a lot of activity at the Louvre, and building that up as a cultural hub might be of interest to multiple characters.

Historically, we've also had several players come to us between missions with plots they want to dig into via our plotting post! This included digging into Aurora's origins as well as asking what they could discover about Echo or the game plot as a whole via exploring around Etraya during their mission downtime. We always want to encourage our playerbase to come to us if they want something meatier to dig into, and we'll do our best to build something suitable to what you're looking for!

Genre Poll
What are you interested in seeing next? This is essentially a vibe check -- if the player base is swinging in a different direction than what we planned, we're open to changing those plans!

I have collected all the notes left by the individual Scylla after Mission 012 that I could find available and uploaded them to the shared data repository.¹

According to Ms. Won in her post here, there are 10 in total, meaning that one note remains missing. If you are in possession of this note, please contribute it to the data repository. These notes are the biggest credible lead on getting to the truth of things that I've seen in my time here; I cannot emphasize enough how imperative it is that you share the missing document.

There are two sides to these pages, one side being narrative journal entries and the other complex higher-order math. I have been working with Accelerator (un: accelerator) on deciphering what we can of the mathematics, and we have drawn the following conclusion with reasonable certainty:² this is a mathematical representation of the inevitable decline and resulting destruction of the fabric of reality. In other words, it demonstrates proof of Echo's claim that worlds are falling apart from natural causes.

Based on my own knowledge of 20th century Earth scientific discoveries, this is plausible. The universe is infinitely expanding and at an accelerating rate, and though we have a poor understanding of the eventual consequences of that, that is a measurable fact.³ It appears whoever took these notes was working through the implications on their own with far more advanced instrumentation available than what is familiar to either Accelerator or myself.

Reviewing the text of the pages leads me to several further conclusions:

    (1) These were most likely written by Echo themselves as they came to the mathematical conclusion I just described.
    (2) The author demonstrates sincere remorse and went to incredible lengths to attempt to resolve this problem, but it was beyond their capabilities. If these are written by Echo, then they have become some kind of god-like being in their pursuit of saving worlds, but that still was not enough.
    (3) Ultimately, they placed their hopes in the idea that if they could buy time, someone else could find a solution, whether it be a mysterious blacked-out name referenced in the entries or someone from a different world entirely.
    (4) It is possible that our task to prove the 'worth' of our worlds is being measured on this scale, that of how likely our societies are to be able to address this problem, making it a pragmatic determination and not one based on any inherent qualities of 'worthiness' otherwise.
    (5) The time scale on which this is all taking place is likely literally astronomical.

Furthermore, reports of conversations had with Scylla indicates it is highly likely that Scylla personally knows Echo. He stated in one conversation that the math was intended for our receipt and would have been provided by Aurora, but the journal entries were not, and he deliberately intercepted them and ensured their distribution throughout Etraya. Scylla intimated to Ms. Won that the pages reveal something about what he and Aurora are cursed not to speak of. What that might be, I'm unsure.

Most importantly, Scylla provided verbal confirmation to Ms. Won that he also believed the worlds are unraveling. All of these facts combined, I think we must take that as true going forward.

Please share in the comments any other inferences you feel could be reasonably drawn, and we may discuss further.

¹This was posted about recently, but if you haven't seen it, there is now a data repository available for communal use. It is maintained by Sunday (un: sunday) and myself (un: finch). Please contact us if you have any questions on how to make use of it.
²Certainty would, of course, increase with the final note included in our analysis.
³For further reading on the topic, I suggest Barbara Ryden's Introduction to Cosmology published in 2003. It is available at the library.

Happy birthday to you
